In recognition of the importance of Chinese proficiency in further studies and meaningful employment, Hong Kong Unison works with education professionals to provide ethnic minority children with:
- Chinese Language Tutorship
- Chinese Enhancement Class
Online Chinese Learning Support Project
The pilot program was launched in May 2020 at the height of pandemic outbreak when classes were indefinitely suspended. Concerned parents reached out to Unison as the Chinese proficiency of their children was declining. University youth lost their part-time job as tutors as all tutorial centers closed during the pandemic. Unison launched the project with the help of Jockey Club “COVID-19 Emergency Fund”. Our objective was to support ethnic minority children on Chinese learning so they could keep up with school work and not slip “backward” in Chinese proficiency. Later on with the support of Chen Yat-Sen Family Foundation (CYSFF) we re-launched the project in Jan 2021. We distributed laptops, tablets, computers and sim cards to needy families to facilitate virtual learning. We conducted parent focus group discussions and storybook reading days to engage the families.
1. Intensive online Chinese enhancement classes for 26 K2 to P2 ethnic minority children
2. One-to-one online Chinese tutorial sessions for 53 P3-F5 ethnic minority children with 27
university ethnic minority youth
Till Nov 2021, we did 1017 Chinese enhancement classes and 3173 Chinese tutorials.
